This blue sky will have to do...

Used my Worn blue cover texture available along with my other free textures.
I also used a dirty plaster texture but can't remember the source.

With the rain we've been having this week, I haven't had the privilege of seeing a blue sky that much. So I went into my photos (taken only a couple of weeks ago) and found some blue sky. My "Tahitian Sunset" rose had decided to bloom in the unusual January warm weather. It looked so cool against the blue sky that I had to turn it into a "painting". It's always good to stop and enjoy a blue sky, so the creative process afforded me that opportunity to really drink it in.

Another spot of "blue sky" is when someone thinks of me and honors me with a blogging award. I've been really behind in acknowledging the awards I've received as of late. I know that I'm not remembering at least one, and I sincerely apologize if I missed yours.

I received this pretty award from Carolynn at Glowing Ember. The hearts are an instant fave of mine (I love Valentine's Day). The award is to be passed on to eight recipients and should be awarded to blogs "...[that] are exceedingly charming. These kind bloggers aim to find and be friends. They are not interested in self-aggrandizement. Our hope is that when the ribbons of these prizes are cut, even more friendships are propagated. Please give more attention to these writers. Deliver this award to eight bloggers who must choose eight more and include this cleverly-written text into the body of their award." Since I can't possible single out only eight of my favorite blogs, I am passing this award along to every dear blogging friend because you all fit this description to me.

Then I received this absolutely adorable pink and green award from Debbi at Aunt Debbi's Garden. I'm supposed to list six things that make me happy... Hubby, kitties, gardening, church service, Chinese chicken salad, and sunshine. There are so many other things that I could list that make me happy.

I'm curious... what things make you the happiest and why?

When It Rains Love, It Pours!

I've been blessed to receive not one, but TWO awards from two very special blogging friends!

The "I Love Your Blog" award was awarded to me by PGL at Perennial Garden Lover. If you haven't yet visited her delightful blog, you really need to take a peek. I get so many planting ideas from her. But most importantly, I can always count on PGL to leave a comment on my blog that makes me smile.

The "You Are My Sunshine On a Cloudy Day" award was awarded to me by Debbi at Aunt Debbi's Garden who I wish I could give a huge big hug to right now because she said I was "a sweet talented girl"! I love that I'm still a "girl" at almost 42 years old!!!!!

I have a really hard time passing awards along to people because I don't like leaving anyone out. So these awards go to everyone listed in my sidebar. If you're in my sidebar, it's because I love your blog and your spirit that shines through there!

An Award!

Today I was surprised and honored to be given the "Arte y Pico" award by Miss Peach at Miss Peach's Meowz.

"The 'Arte y Pico' award was created and to be given to bloggers who inspire others with their creative energy and their talents, whether it be writing, artwork in all media. When you receive this award it is considered a 'special honor'. Once you have received this award, you are to pass it on to at least 5 others."

I feel very honored to receive this award and am so thrilled to be able to pass it on to the following blogs that inspire me with their creative energy and talents:

Joanie at Joanie's Balonie because her digital scrapbook layouts are truly ART! She is a Photoshop genius (in my humble opinion). You've GOT to check out her work. I want to someday accomplish what she does in Photoshop.

Catherine Holman at Pigment of Your Imagination just because work makes me "drool" creatively and everytime I visit her blog I want to get into my studio, push up my sleeves, and paint something!

Gretel at Middle of Nowhere because her creative journey has inspired me in so many ways I can't even recount them here. Her work is magical and whimsical, and if you haven't taken the time to visit her blog, you must. I will warn you... you'll fall in love with her work and want it for yourself.

Thea Burger at Shades of Life for her amazing paintings that have hints of Mary Cassatt in them with their impressionistic interpretation of beautiful objects. Then with the addition of great framing, her art is simply gorgeous.

Helen Read at Brushstrokes Etc. because her paintings always make me think beyond my own current style and inspire me to explore. Her current work on sunflowers is just phenomenal! She is such a prolific creator that it astounds me.

A Wonderful Welcome Home!

I haven't posted for a couple of days because Hubby and I were on a trip. Hubby had business in Southern California and let me tag along. Then he took a day off work Friday, Feb 29th, so he could treat me to a trip to Disneyland! We had a wonderful time, but I didn't have access to a computer for a couple of days (oh no what shall I do?).

I'm just sitting down checking up on things and not 5 minutes ago I found that Siobhan at Vintage Mosaic Boutique not only celebrated her 100th post while I was away, but awarded Rosehaven Cottage the lovely "You Make My Day" award! It was such a wonderful thing to come home to, Siobhan! Thank you!

And since I've spent the entire day traveling I'm going to have to forego passing on the award to anyone for the time being. Instead, I'll direct you to go over to Siobhan's newly renovated site. It's just gorgeous!

Love of Home and Roots of Many Kinds

In honor of Valentine's Day this week, I want to write a post about love in a very different somewhat non-romantic form sans the lace and red hearts.

This week marks the 31st anniversary of my family moving back to the place of my birth from a 7 year hiatus in the state of Colorado, allowing me to reconnect with my roots in the San Francisco Bay Area.

I am very fortunate to be a 4th generation Bay Area native born in the same county as my mother, my grandmother, and my great-grandfather. My great-great grandparents had immigrated from Glasgow, Scotland with my great-great grandfather working his way across the American continent from east to west on the railroad as a welder and machinist. When he reached the Bay Area, he knew he'd found his second home because it reminded him so much of his beloved Scotland. I have been to Glasgow as an adult and immediately saw the connections between that wonderful city and San Francisco. I can see why he felt he had arrived "home". That's exactly how I felt when we found Rosehaven Cottage over 7 years ago. It needed a lot of love and hard work but it felt like our home. With all the work we've done both inside and out we've definitely put down some deep roots (photo above was taken just yesterday).

This past weekend the lovely purple heads of the crocus showed themselves in all their glory. They are so low to the ground that they are easy to miss if one doesn't know to look for them. But I always watch for them and then point them out to Hubby when they've bloomed. The rich orangey-yellow of their stamens contrasts so strikingly against the blue-purple of the petals that it always leaves me in awe of how beautiful nature can be. I have learned to love the little surprise gifts that nature provides again and again, year after year.

One reason why we named Rosehaven Cottage with that name is because when we came here we discovered a handful of neglected rosebushes that had been chopped back severely but were not giving up. These old roses are not labeled so I don't really know what variety they are. The most "ancient" looking of the bunch has red blooms like a Mister Lincoln. Then down the fenceline is this lovely pink rose that grows like a climber. It doesn't ever seem to stop producing blooms. No matter what time of year, I can almost always find a pink bud or blossom on it. Right now it has a nice collection of heavy pink blooms that look magical in the February sunlight as it shines on and through the petals of each bloom.

There is something about the smell of spring bulb flowers that is so enchanting and soothing to me. The smell of paperwhites, narcissus, daffodils, and tulips all have a distinct nuance but they all say "spring" to me with all the wonderful feelings that association brings. A couple of years ago, I planted some bulbs in the neighbor's yard across the street along the curb in a patch of land that she was happy to have me volunteer to tend. Each year since, the sweet yellow teacup blossoms have come out heralding the full sun that shines on that patch of ground practically from sun up to sun down. As if they've stepped straight from my favorite Disney animated classic Alice in Wonderland, they remind me that you indeed CAN learn a lot of things from the flowers.

Finally, there are now roots of a different kind that I have grown to cherish and those are my roots that have begun to grow within the blogging community. Like the arrival of the glorious crocus blossoms that I anticipate so much, I anticipate the arrival of each new comment on my blog and each new post from a favorite fellow blogger. As I drink in the essence of each of you the way that I breathe in the aroma of each distinct spring flower, I am rejuvenated and filled with a renewal that is hard to describe but is real and powerful. Just as I can learn a lot of things from the flowers, each of my blogging friends is a flower that I can and do learn a great deal from.

Here are a couple of perfect examples of this very phenomenon. This last week I received the following award from Tristi Pinkston, LDS Author. Tristi is a very talented published writer who I am honored to have reading my blog. In giving this "You Make My Day" award, she made MY day (which had been not too great up to that point). Her thoughtfulness gave me a certain boost into a more positive direction creatively. Thank you Tristi!

Then later in the week I received the "This Blog is Rated E for Excellent" award from Jodi at bloomingwriter. Jodi is another very talented published writer and gardening expert that I admire immensely and am so humbled to have as a friend. Receiving Jodi's award in short succession after receiving the award from Tristi, really gave me a swift kick in the creative can.

Kylee at Our Little Acre commented recently on how technology has facilitated the forming of friendships across the miles that otherwise never would have happened. I remember reading a post last summer from one blogger who talked about how before blogging she felt so alone in her immediate community because none of the other mommies on the playground on play-day understood what it was like to be an artist. It made her feel isolated and alone. Then after she started blogging, she realized she wasn't alone at all. There were many women throughout the world that understood her and were similar to her in so many ways. It's just that those women didn't live in close proximity to her. Without the internet, she never would have connected with them! I can relate so well to that sentiment. And Kylee's too. Because of this wonderful technology, I now have friends around the globe that understand me. I no longer feel isolated like the "odd one" that no one in the neighborhood "gets". Thank you to all of you for making that a reality! I am passing on the two awards above to every one of you because you all deserve them. Thank you for helping me to feel rooted in something real and wonderful.

Feeling the Valentine Spirit

Thanks to Catherine Holman the folk artist at Pigment of Your Imagination, I'm feeling in very Valentine-y mood! She just awarded the Rosehaven Cottage blog with the Spread the Love Award!

Thank you so much, Catherine. Your award came just at the right time to lift my spirits, as I've been having to deal with my health issues in a big way lately. The sunny day yesterday and today coupled with this lovely award are just what I needed.

The Spread the Love Award originated from Mica at Garb-oodles Soup with the Mica's purpose being, "I have met so many lovely and very talented ladies here in Blogdom, what more can I do or say to express my humbled heart to each, than to give all my Dearest Readers and Friends a special award filled with Love. So, Spread The Love dear ones, Spread The Love to those you love. Except my award in which I have specially designed and share it with others. Enjoy the day."

I feel the same as Mica. I've met so many wonderful friends that have lifted me and strengthened me through my associations with them through blogging. I am passing on this award to:

Jodi at bloomingwriter for being such a ray of sunshine.
Kylee at Our Little Acre for her sense of humor that always brings a smile to my face.
Yolanda and the entire Bliss Team who have given me joy from the Bliss blog as well as important support and expertise with little Lucy.
Holly at 2 Kids and Tired for being the best Scrabulous competitor EVER!

A big hug to all these ladies for what they've done for me without really knowing it! And also a big hug to everyone else (too countless to list) that lift me, make me smile, and bring a bright spot to my day!

The Most Recent Recipient of our Rose Medallion for Excellence Award

We are pleased to award another Rose Medallion for Excellence. This time the award goes to Kari and Kijsa and their blog Ask Kari and Kijsa.

For those that love beauty, a visit to Kari and Kijsa's blog will be a treat beyond description. The two sisters have created a gem of a blog with a gorgeous layout, aesthetic, and look. It is so appealing to Cindy's fellow designer's eye that she often likes to go and just look at it like a favorite book. But great design can't stand on its own without soul and heart--which their blog just exudes. We cannot even find the words to describe it adequately. Go visit their blog and you'll see what we mean!

Milestones That Warm Our Hearts

Yesterday, Oreo, the garden kitty, achieved a major milestone in her little feral kitty life. Oreo curled up and laid down in a little ball of fur on my lap for an extended period of time and actually just let herself be stroked while she curled up and kneaded my lap! This morning, she did the same thing for almost a full 30 minutes. I was honored to have her completely bathe my fingers on both hands with her sweet little pink sandpaper tongue.

Being only 4-5 pounds, Oreo is diminutive in size and is very cautious and afraid of everything because of it. We had just moved here when she was born over 6 years ago, and she has led a solitary life away from all the other cats that she is related to that make up the feral colony that lives across the street where a kind neighbor is a steward over them with assistance from A.R.F. (Animal Rescue Foundation).

Over time Oreo came to adopt our garden, then our front porch, and finally us. It took about three years for us to be able to touch her. She now spends most of her days in our front and back gardens and her nights are spent on or around our very sheltered front porch (with a heated bed and heat lamp for chilly nights).

This week's events of her becoming a "lap kitty" have been very momentous for us and for Oreo. She has accomplished a lot, and we are very proud of her for being so brave and trusting us gargantuan human beings.

And on another wonderful note...

Holly over at 2 Kids and Tired awarded me this award, and I am very touched! “The award was created by The Little Aussie Cynic to honor those blogs with integrity..." and can be awarded in several different categories. Holly chose to award me in the category of "For Social Conscience" and says:
"For Social Conscience, Cindy because she strives to live in harmony with the world around her and shares herself and her insights with us all."
I am so touched that someone views me and this blog that way. It is an amazing honor! I try to do my part in being a good steward in this world and for the earth. I'm happy that it comes through in my writing.

All photographs featured here can be made available as unframed or framed prints, high-quality posters,

We Received An Award!

Rosehaven Cottage just received the above award from our friend Mark over at The Green Fingered Photographer.

The "Change begins at home" award originates from Bean Sprouts and is given to bloggers who live what they preach, who try to make the changes in their own lives that they would like to see in the world.

This is a very special award to us because it really does epitomize what we firmly believe--change really does begin in the home. We are so touched that someone has recognized that through our efforts in blogging.

Rosehaven Cottage would like to pass this award on to the following bloggers who truly live the spirit of this award through their blogs:

It's "Rose Medallion" Monday

The "Rose Medallion" is given by us at Rosehaven Cottage to blogs that we find to be of exceptional merit in design and content. The blogs given this honor are those that we have found particular enjoyment, inspiration, and/or insight(s) in reading--blogs that have exhibited a passion for living. We hope that the "Rose Medallion" recipients this week will be pleased to display it on their blogs.

We are honoring the following blogs this week:

Peripheral Vision--Inner Sights by Lynda Lehmann
Lynda is a multi-faceted artist whose work (which she features on her blog) offers a vibrancy as well a sense of inner strength and serenity. Take time and browse. You'll be glad you did! We guarantee you'll walk away with some inspiration to create something. We did!

Miss Peach's Meowz
Featuring the adorable and lovable kitty cat Miss Peach, this blog is a must-read for us on a daily basis. The photography and art (not all "kitty related) is a true joy to view. Many times there is a gem of poetry that makes us come away with a lightness of heart that only really lovely writing can induce.

Greenie Gardens
This blog is a real favorite of ours simply because of the passion for gardening that is expressed there. The photographs are lovely, regardless of whether one has a green thumb or a brown one. Covering quilting, cats, roses, and life in general, this blog is a wonderful example of what living life with passion encompasses.

The Rosehaven Cottage "Rose Medallion" for Excellence

We, at Rosehaven Cottage, are pleased to announce the introduction of a new award exclusively from Rosehaven Cottage--The Rosehaven Cottage "Rose Medallion" for Excellence.

The "Rose Medallion" will be given by Rosehaven Cottage to blogs that we find to be of exceptional merit in design and content. The blogs given this honor will be those that we have found particular enjoyment, inspiration, and/or insight(s) in reading--blogs that have exhibited a passion for living. We hope as the "Rose Medallion" is awarded, that the recipients of this honor will be pleased to display it on their blogs.

The first recipient to accept this award is Daisy the Curly Cat whose whimsical blog has brought us such enjoyment and laughter we cannot begin to put it into words. Her Sunday Comics are wonderful gems that make us giggle (sometimes full on hysterical laughter like when Daisy drove a car). If you have not discovered Daisy, please visit her blog and enter the world of a wonderful little cat with great fashion sense.

The second recipient to accept this award is Holly at 2 Kids and Tired. Holly is a very talented writer that is raising two darling boys in the way that boys should be raised -- with lots of love! She writes about life and her blog is inspirational and thought-provoking. Her occasional blogs entitled "Conversation At Our House" featuring conversational exchanges with her boys always bring a smile to my face.

The third recipient to accept this award is Kylee at Our Little Acre. Like I imagine her gardens to be, Kylee's loving approach to blogging is infectious with its enthusiasm for gardening, creativity, and life. As I have written about her before, "Kylee is a wonderful writer, photographer, and gardener that has captured so much in her endearing blog that I wait with great anticipation for each new installment to brighten my day and inspire me". This is what Kylee says about her own blog:
"These are the adventures of a rural Ohio gardener (me) and a camera that
seems to be stuck in macro mode much of the time. I share what I know and what I'm learning about plants, flowers, butterflies, insects, and birds, and because
my life only consists of 95% gardening, the rest of me is thrown in from time to
time
." [See what I mean?]

Very unexpected award

To my utter surprise Anna at My Only Photo has awarded me with the Rockin' Girl Blogger award. I am so touched. I have enjoyed her blog immensely as well as her photography. To then have her give me this award is indeed an honor. She had no idea that I really needed a boost today (it's just one of those days). Thank you, Anna!

I am passing this award on to some of my favorite bloggers that I love to read on a daily basis (albeit only three when I believe it's usually five):

Kris at Gardens By the Lake--a wonderful blogger that let's her personality shine through in her writing and her photography of her beautiful gardens. Her comments on my blogs always make me smile and feel a little bit happier.

Kylee at Our Little Acre--a wonderful writer, photographer, and gardener that has captured so much in her endearing blog that I wait with great anticipation for each new installment to brighten my day and inspire me.

Daisy at Daisy the Curly Cat--a rockin' feline girl blogger that is cute as a button and a fashion diva to boot. I feel very privileged to have her as a kitty friend.

Thank you to all the above Rockin' Girl Bloggers for making my days a little brighter and inspiring me to reach a little higher.

The Writer’s Review Inspiration Award

I was so pleasantly surprised when I received a message from Walks Far Woman at Kissing the Dogwood that she had awarded Rosehave Cottage with the Inspirational Blogger Award! It is probably the most touching honor that I (and my husband who also is behind the Rosehaven Cottage blogs) could have received because our main purpose for starting this blog was to somehow be an inspiration to at least one person through sharing our own stories and lives. It was a hard decision for us to embark on this undertaking for many reasons that don't need to be discussed here and now. I'm so glad we did! This award has made all the second-guessing worth it. Thank you!

As is the tradition, I would like to pass this award along to Desert Candy, the very first blog that I began reading on a daily basis. The passion with which this blog is written (as well as the photographs and layout of the blog) gave me a great deal of inspiration when I was just starting my blog and not sure how to do it or whether it was worth it. I was so overwhelmed by all the possibilities and almost gave up until I found Desert Candy on Blogger's "Blogs of Note". When I read the blog for the first time I thought, "This is beautiful! And it IS worth doing this blog thing!" The writing style at Desert Candy is lovely and many of the photographs have left me speechless and staring at the computer screen. Thank you to Mercedes at Desert Candy for being MY inspiration.
