Every spring, these wonderful perennials pop up in my front garden. Sometimes they pop up in the place where they were last year as a true perennial growing from last year's roots. Because poppies are excellent at reseeding themselves, sometimes they surprise me by popping up in new places that they haven't been before.
The serendipity of discovering new feathery poppy seedlings is always a treat for me in the spring. I see their little green leaves begin to come forth after we've had the winter rains of December and January. By February, they're beginning to make themselves known. But I have to wait until April to see their gorgeous brilliant blossoms. More often than not, I'm a bit impatient for them to bloom, so that when they finally do bloom I am dying with anticipation. Who knew that gardening would be so much like Christmas morning when I was a kid?

ReplyDeleteCondolences to your family on the loss of what looks like a great man! I love california poppies. My grandmother and I used to press them and do all sorts of art projects with them. They are a hardy little plant as you would have to be to grow in Montana!

ReplyDeleteCan you believe I planted these for the first time last year and got ONE bloom out of the whole gray-green bunch? The plants themselves didn't even get very big.

ReplyDeleteI love these richly coloured poppies too and I usually see them growing wild along the waterfront where seeds have somehow made their way. Really pretty.

ReplyDeleteI've grown the 'Mikado' variety for several years. Like yours, some manage to over-summer and bloom again another year, some self-sow, and some I start myself and then transplant. They go to seed all to fast no matter how vigorously I try to deadhead them. But they are as gorgeous as they are fleeting.

ReplyDeleteOk, this photo says California to me. You know how much I miss those poppies!! One of these days I'm going to get it together and purchase a large print of this to frame. Some day I will also manage to get some seeds.

One of my favorites! They reseed so prolificly for me, I have to pull them like weeds and just leave a few.
